The University of Madras is a public analysis University in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is among the three oldest universities in India (together with the University of Calcutta and the University of Mumbai). The college is modeled after the University of London and was included on 5 September 1857 by an act of the Legislative Council of India, and is regulated by the University Grants Fee of the government of India.

The University is located within the southern metropolis of Chennai. It is a collegiate university and has six campuses in the metropolis Chepauk, Marina, Guindy, Taramani, Maduravoyal and Chetpet. Greater than 50 departments provide a spread of subjects.In 2004, all engineering courses of the college had been shifted to Anna University. The college supplies affiliation to colleges. The departments of the university conduct analysis along with teaching.

There are nearly forty three exterior research institutes along with centres of excellence inside the University.The Nationwide Evaluation and Accreditation Council has conferred Five Star Status to the university and it has been given the status of “College with Potential for Excellence” by the University Grants Commission.

The first ever demand for greater schooling in Madras Presidency was given in a public address to Lord John Elphinstone, Governor of Madras, signed by 70,000 residents when the Governor in Council was considering “some efficient and liberal measures for the institution of an improved system of nationwide education.” This public petition, which was introduced by the Advocate General Mr. George Norton on 11 November 1839, pressed the need for an English faculty in the metropolis of Madras.

Pursuant to this, Lord Elphinstone developed a plan for the establishment of a Central Collegiate Establishment or a ‘University.’ This college had twin Departments – a highschool for the cultivation of English literature, regional language, philosophy and science, and a university for instruction in the increased branches of literature, philosophy and science.
