Gulbarga University was founded in 1980 by an Act of Karnataka State. Their authorities extend to the five districts of Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur, Bellary and Koppal of Hyderabad and Karnataka.  Previous it was a PG centre of Karnatak University, Dharwad since 1970.

The University registers about 3500 students each year for a variety of post-graduate in various disciplines.Gulbarga University was a post graduation centre of Karnatak University, India. In 1980 The Government of Karnataka enacted a law and gave it the status of university.

Its jurisdiction extends to the five districts of Gulbarga District, Bidar District, Raichur District, Bellary District and Koppal District of Hyderabad Karnataka. The main campus is located 10 km away from the Gulburga city centre. The university has more than 37 teaching departments and 4 research centres.
